Stefan Payne nearly had red for a poor challenge and Gills have six bookings as the game has got very scrappy. Still 1-0 to Brighton. Noone puts a free-kick over - 4 minutes of stoppage time

Good performance, sound defensively apart from dodgy pen. Like in pre season, not enough going forward. Keds needs a partner

Doesn't sound like a bad performance from what I've heard but I'm already worried about the number of bookings we're collecting. Fight and passion are vital, yes, but I'm not sure we are showing our fight and passion in the right way. Seems to me that Hessenthaler has learned little from last season and remains utterly and naively convinced that the only way to be successful in League Two is by going with his preconceptions that long ball and thuggery are the way to get out of League Two. The three automatically promoted sides proved that thoroughly incorrect last year.
Yes, I like to see players who care and give their all, but I don't want us getting the wrong sort of reputation.
Still, maybe it explains why we've got so many centre-backs and centre-midfielders if we're going to lose players to suspension all the time...

Jaggy, share your concern about the yellows, though the ref was harsh with us tonight, but we're not a long ball side at all. We were actually criticised by some for not getting the ball forward quick enough Saturday and we played good football for periods tonight

Yeah, the long ball was a bit of a throwaway comment, but we do seem to have replaced that with just being dirty. I was told in pre-season to expect a lot of yellows, but to already have two players on two bookings, one already sent off and another who most observers think should have gone last night is not big or clever.
Also read some people on Twitter saying that we have very little width, which given we have five midfielders in the starting XI and two full-backs who are never shy of getting forward is a massive worry for me. Can't see many goals coming if we're trying to work it all down the middle with only Kedwell up front...

See that Hess has said in his post match interview that we lost our discipline towards the end and that Payne should have been sent off. Hopefully the players will get the message or we'll be playing with 10 too often. In defence of the players, they had to work hard last night to contain Brighton and players can often get frustrated - certainly Kedwell's job was totally thankless being on his own upfront with the midfield often not getting up quick enough to support him.
The wingers we have seem to want to cut inside - which you can understand with Spills being right footed and playing on the left, but they are going to need to get more supply in for Kedwell to score goals without doubt.
Hopefully the last 2 games have made the striker situation that bit more pressing......

Simple solution to the Spiller problem - drop him. He's like a cockroach, always in the team, even when he doesn't really deserve it. The losses of Palmer and Barcham are being felt more than most expected, I think...

I went to the match last night and don't disagree with many of the comments made.
However, I didn't think we looked a dirty side, we just look a strong unit. What are we supposed to do, just watch them score 4 or 5. It's only the second game of the new season and we certainly don't look a team that will roll over easily.
The whole evening was ready made for Brighton, as was their game on saturday. It was the first evening game at the new ground ( which I thought was wonderful and the noise created was fantastic ). A big crowd, etc, etc.
Brighton are in the championship after storming league 1 last year. They are a good team. and everything is going their way.
So taking all that in to consideration, I felt we did well. But a loss is a loss. On another note, I thought Fuller was completely out classed by their winger ( although he won't face too many like him in league 2 ) I was very impressed with Fish when he came on and I think Fuller will have to lift his game to keep his place.

The losses of Palmer and Barcham are being felt more than most expected, I think... The solution for me is Jackman. I know most on here think he is a waste of space and think he should be sold to free up funds, but as a fullback and midfielder, he is probably the most natural player on our books to play left wing. He'll stay on the left and not float in, and he will deliver some quicker crosses in rather than needing to cut back on his right foot like Spiller et all do. And yes, I recall hearing Jackman was unavailable last night, but I am talking generally. The inclusion of Spiller seems to be a "who are my best players and where can I play them even if it is forcing squares into a round hole?". I wasn't convinced about Spiller last season and from the two matches this season, I'm still not convinced about him playing there now.

What are we supposed to do, just watch them score 4 or 5. Where has anyone said that? I think the views of most are that there are more efficient ways of stopping other teams rather than kicking them and surrounding the ref at every opportunity. Yes, be competitive, yes, get stuck in, but there is a line and it can't be crossed. If the ref - as everyone is saying in defence of the team - is card happy, don't give him an excuse to get out the cards. And if fouling players is the only way to stop them, then, essentially, we're not good enough. Appreciate it was a team from two leagues above and therefore we're not better than them, but does anyone think Barnet, Morecambe, Macclesfield and Northampton kicked their way to their wins last night? Cos I doubt they did.

It is just that we in the case that we should not be picking silly yellows for Dissent, like Martin did last night.

I thought Brighton used their huge pitch well last night without creating any real work for Flitney. Most Brighton possession was keeper and back four which will make for some pretty boring football at the Amex when they face better sides than us.
Gills looked solid at the back as has been said but we desperately needed that strike partner last night as Brighton dwelt on the ball too much where a second forward could have pressured more As for the ref, he did come with a record of loving his yellow card but surprisingly didn't send Payne off for the worst tackle of the night. Penalty could have gone either way but lets hope we get one or more to even it out this season. So no 'giant' kill but well done to the Shrews and Macclesfield etc who showed it can be done.
