As it's an extremely pleasant day, and I've got the day off, my mind has turned to what there is to look forward to Gillingham-wise next year. Here are my predictions:
1) We will have beaten Tranmere on Good Friday. This, and our victory over Walsall, meant that we could enjoy the game vs Shrewsbury and all applauded as Peter Taylor signed his new contract on the pitch at the end of the game.
2) Work started straight away on the new pitch which glistened, billiard table-like, for our first game of the season vs Millwall, who we thrash.
3) The summer was spent reading about the five or six ex-England U21 players who, having been disillusioned with life in the Premiership and their seemingly endless wait for game time due to expensive foreign imports, have made their way to Gillingham with tales of how Peter Taylor was the best coach they ever worked with.
Didn't get any further than that as the dust cart turned up and I remembered I hadn't put the bins out.

The future has started with some very good news as Bradley Dack has signed until 2018.

Excellent news. He must be one of the first names to go on the team sheet for Friday, surely.

Firstly can I welcome the long term signing of Dack. Now the future well unlike many I do not believe that Scally has given Taylor the green light as yet.So far we have yet to see any senior player sign for next season. No new coaches not evrn the ticket prices have been set. When Taylor was signed Scally spoke of a win win situation.I Still believe at that point Scally had his eye on someone else.Believing he would be better placed if he waited. It could be that the manager was under contract at another club.Whatever the future I do not see it as being as cut and dry as others seem to think.

Interesting theory, stato. I know Scally has always wanted to work with Micky Adams. Am I right in thinking he's out of contract in the summer?

Hopefully Taylor no matter what will not be here in a coaching capacity next season,I look at what our greatest ever Manager Tony Pulis has done in a short time at Palace who were in a similar predicament to us all be it at a higher level and the difference in class is immense, Tony has brought team work and stability to the Palace whilst all Taylor has done is bring uncertainty and no cohesion to the Gills! I bring this up because I am sick and tired of individuals bringing up the fact that Peter Taylor won us promotion last time he was at our helm, that was with Tony's team!
On another note it would be good to see Micky Adams in charge here who know he might bring his Captain Loft here especially as he is local and might want to get away from the club after being assaulted and being also out of contract!

I always took Scally's view about it being a win-win in the context that if Taylor kept us up (considering the position we were in at the time) then that is clearly a win. But if Taylor failed, then Scally could sack him without needing to pay out compensation. A small consolationary "win", but a win nevertheless. Plus if it looked as if relegation was likely then Scally would have time to plan his next manager. Not convinced Scally had his eye on a manager from another club who would be out of contract at the end of the season. As per Stimson, Scally is prepared to pay compensation to get the manager he wants - and presumably that fee wouldn't be too great if the manager was out of contract soon. I agree that Scally thinks he would have a better pick if he waited until the end of the season to offer the job to someone full time. Although I personally think that at the time Taylor was hired, there was no candidates that stuck out as great choices - although the usual names of Adams, Curbishley, Constantine naturally cropped up, plus numerous other managers who had a good spell somewhere once. Personally, I think it is cut and dry if Taylor keeps us up - he will be offered the job. If he fails, then I think it is a bit more hit and miss. I don't think it is a case of relegation would necessarily see Taylor not offered the job.

Speaking of Tony Pulis, has anybody noticed how well Forest Green Rovers now managed by Adie Pennock who worked as a coach with Pulis for 10 years, are doing in the Conference. I know that many Gills supporters are against appointing non-league managers but Pennock was Gills through and through, always had a positive attitude and must have learned some of Pulis's methods. At the very least he would know how to set up the defence which seems to be beyond Taylor.

Can we not go down the path of hiring any ex-Gillingham player who happens to be doing well at the present...
Plus Pennock's falling out with Scally over a (non)testimonal may make it unlikely he will return to the club.

We need to move on from that whole era. We had a wonderful squad of players and it was a joy to watch, but that era isn't going to happen again. The only throwback I'd love is tony pulis coming back and hell still feels rather warm at the moment

I like others no doubt have very fond memories of Ade Pennock he always says hello in fact he came up and spoke to me only a short while ago while shopping.I too would love to see him back one day and it could happen. However I would say it could be a few years yet.I would not rule out success for him long term we would be wise to keep a open mind me thinks.
