Some strong words there, and agree their timing is completely out as usual.

The FA is not a body that commands much respect but that does not justify the chairman's statement. Let's remember we find ourself in this position because of previous maladministration, poor decisions and refusal to learn lessons. The very least he should have done was give himself time to respond rationally. This issue became largely one of image and reputation as soon as we lost the first case. In fact with hindsight we should have paid McCammon's contract up once we decided we wanted rid.
Behaving in a way that the case end up at a tribunal was error number one
Fighting and losing the case was error number two and raised the ante.
Appealing was pure folly and ensured the whole thing escalated to national notice.
Our churlish response to losing the appeal was error number four and lost us any lingering neutral sympathy. It was then we lost all hope of emerging with any credit at all.
I thought we had learned a hard lesson and that the issue had been put to bed but our intransigence has come back to bite us. Scally's Sky comments are error number five and may yet prove very damaging indeed.

I actually feel sorry for Paul Scally admittedly I am not his biggest fan and his P R leaves a lot to be desired, but to me in a lot of cases unnecessarily so, the word Racism is used and every one runs screaming for cover! The F A are one of the chief exponents of this and sadly I think they will hit us hard, sadly how often do you hear of anyone successfully defend theirselves of the accusation of racism, its like the nuclear bomb of the English language! I have heard from a Chelsea fan who was disgusted by the vile chants of his own fans against Liverpool fans over Hillsborough, but where is the F A furore over that these matches were big occasions but has the F A dealt with that! Before I get of accused of racism myself my point is that there are a lot of massive issues the F A could deal with such as the rising cost of the game for example but Racism is their flag bearer for attention! Sorry Gills I have a feeling our punishment is going to be excessive!

All the grounds I've been in also have signs up saying how foul and abusive language won't be tolerated. You're right, you do have to wonder what the FA's definition of foul and abusive language is when it seems that, apart from racist chants, it seems you can shout or sing about anything. Certainly you can say things you'd never get away with outside a football ground.

This case also shows how one sided players contracts are. As most fans I have spoken to did not rate Macammon as a footballer at all and that's being nice about what was actually said. Not taking a generous offer and moving on he chose to stay put. All he had to do in my understanding was turn up for training and be available for selection to honour his side of the contract. Getting rid of such a player is to say the least difficult, and it wasn't as if half of League 2 or the Conference were beating a path to his door. He was a bad signing by Mark Stimson, and he knew he was onto a good thing. I think this episode proves that clubs need to fight to change players contracts so if you by a complete dud like Macammon there should be a procedure, even by some sort of tribunal to sort this kind of thing out, before it leads to the desperate measures Gillingham were driven to.

I heard PS on Radio Kent this morning & I am sure that he said that because of an omission of a very important and relevant point by their solicitor in a written statement at the tribunal, they were found guilty. However, because of this oversight, the solicitors insurance ended up paying McCammon's 68K and all of the costs of the tribunal. If this is true, to date, the club have incurred no loss whatsoever apart from their good name. He is insistant that the FA know this fact but they have still chosen to charge the club. If he is right the FA could end up with egg on their face.

Incompetency procedures against professional footballers ? I like the sound of that !! There's no-one in the current squad, but over the years I can think of a few who would have found it hard to get a case for the defence together.

We need to stop using the word footballer when we speak about mccammon, just cos he had a pair of football boots it didn't make him a footballer the same as cos I drive a car I'm not a f1 driver. He was possibly the worst player I have ever seen and not just for gills.

He was without a doubt one of the worst signings I have seen. Not sure what Stimpson saw in him to justify bringing him to the club... Expensive as well.

Always thought something fishy with that deal as thought nobody who had seen him play could possibly have signed him. Who knows what goes on when agents involved and money changes hands!!

To be fair muppet, I doubt Stimson was corrupt, he was just hopeless

And maybe didn't have much of a football league scouting network available, having come from non-league?
