When Garmston was injured, he was on the ground, off the pitch, so play wasn't delayed while he was treated/substituted and we conceded with 10 men.
Dack was gesticulating furiously for him to get back on the pitch.
Opposition players who do that get abuse, but which course of action would you prefer our players follow? (apart from checking their kit!)

gamesmanship is part of it, that said unless it is a head injury or obvious break then ref's don't tend to stop play now anyway.

I wasn't at the game yesterday so I can only go by what has been posted on here. Presumably Garmston had been helped off the pitch by the physios ? In which case there must have been some sort of signal to the bench when it was decided he couldn't continue. It does beg the question though: if Martin's not ready to go on, why is he sat on the bench ? Last time I can remember this happening was at a school game when the goalie got injured by a ball hitting him in the face. Because there was only one goalie shirt it had to be removed over his tear-streaked head so the substitute could wear it.

They wouldn't have stopped play but he would have been treated on the pitch once the ball was out of play, thus delaying the game until (maybe) the sub was ready.
He wasn't helped off mistert, it was a tackle on the goal line, so he landed off the pitch iyswim.

Not if he'd have crawled back onto it, surely?
Was anyone else at the game when the opposition were awarded a penalty and they quickly got the substitute changed and brought on so he could take it? Like some other posters on this site I can't remember anything useful like the year or the opposition, only that we were at home.

If he was tackled and landed off the pitch then garmston done nothing wrong, he would have looked a proper tit and risked getting a yellow card if he had deliberately crawled back on just to try and disrupt play, but martin should have been ready regardless, lessons to be learned here.

I agree Swanleygill. It was Dack encouraging him to "cheat" I objected to but I wondered if others felt the same, or if indeed a bit of gamesmanship is to be expected/applauded.

I think it was Blackpool back in the eighties I know it was a well known penalty taker who came on, but I can't recall who it was but it was at the Town end of the ground!

It would not have made any difference if he crawled back on the pitch it would have been up to Barnsley to stop play as it was not a head injury therefore the ref is under no obligation to stop play. As the play changed quickly towards the Gills end why would they stop play unless it was directly obvious to Barnsley and near their play. Anyway Martin had bought out Egans spare shirt out by mistake so they had to go back tom the dressing room to get martins shirt How dumb is that ?

I wasn't suggesting it would have made any difference on this occasion, I doubt it would have delayed play long enough for the dash back to the dressing room and yes, that was very dumb, but the ball was out of play, play had already stopped. If Garmston was on the pitch, it wouldn't have been re-started, which is what caused us the difficulty.
My question really related to the gamesmanship, what level we approve of and when it becomes "cheating". But never mind, the moment has passed!

Very, evo. It may not have made any difference but the fact that he wasn't ready to play reflects very badly on him. Is there any news on how bad Garmston's injury is?

In addition to the shirt incident, nobody on the pitch or bench made a change to the team to cope with the lack of a left back. A forward should have dropped into midfield until a sub could have been made and there was time for that to happen, but they didn't react quick enough. Got to blame the bench for that as they should have made changes immediately and if they did shout instructions onto the pitch then the players need a good kick up the a.,..
