Nor am I gonna verbally bash JE as it is still very early days. Hopefully he will learn quickly and take advice from others. Long ball is conference and with a fair wind will get you results in div2, however, div1 has moved well away from that and a long ball game in this div will get you one thing only - relegation or at least a fight to stay up. The teams who shine in this div play good football and will get promoted at the end of the season, Preston and Bristol especially, and whilst dropped off a little of late, Swindon and mkd.

With Dack largely out of this game McGlashan at his best used as sub there was that lack of link play.Colchester were the team that were the direct side we sort of ended up joining them I am not sure that was what JE wanted at all.Had Cody put away that 1st minute chance the game could have been so different. We just did not cut it put the game to bed and move on we are still on a good run the side is hard to beat.Sure there are areas that need addressing but that is why JE need to know what he has Glenn Morris new contract?Norris 2nd,3rd or 4th choice forward etc yes it is early to look but the same people will moan in a few weeks that we have not decided on our targets.First JE needs to know what he has.Frankly I am not sure about Norris or G.Morris in view of his lack of action and our young England keeper. If he came out of Saturday with a point and able to make a few more correct decisions then I fully support it.We are not ready for the play off and are well on course to stay up.This season was all about the future we have almost done what I felt at the start was a tall order. It could even be a case of a season long loan for Norris but the manager would look a bit daft if he did that and Norris got 20+ goals next term. While it is not likely we will sign anyone for the first few weeks of the window we will soon be able to talk to players with a view to signing them up. To do that JE must know exactly what he needs. Colchester a must win game yes for Colchester not sure it was for us unless you expect to get almost maximum point or have no more wins this season.

Fully agree with your comments stato, with in reason IMO the balance of this season is more academic, a time of assessment by JE, and I feel he already knows enough about the squad to know he can keep us up whilst carrying out "live" trials as it were. COYG and come on season 15/16

Not being there to witness games puts me at a disadvantage but nonetheless feel I should add that we must give JE a chance. There is no better place to assess a player than a league 1 match. You can look good in training whilst starters may be lackadaisical but you can't hide in a game. As to the long ball approach, I agree with the posters here. It does not work. You need possession to score and knocking every ball away to a 50 -50 chance is poor tactically. I am often surprised by how calmly defenders in the EPL and even MLS games in the US bring the ball out of the box or short pass to others to keep possession. Now if you look up and see Cody isolated one on one with a single defender, use the long ball. Otherwise - clearances under pressure excepted - it's a waste of time. COYG

I'm amazed by everybody who have agreed that Saturday wasn't a must win game. I'm surprised by your confidence that Gillingham are safe and can start experiment with squad players. We are only six points clear of the bottom four. We have only gained 3 points out of the last 12 points on offer. For instant, Crawley have gained 6 points on us in the last week and if they beat us on Saturday they will have gained 9 points. On present form, 3 points from the last 4 games doesn't give me confidence to agree with you Statotheblue. I seem to remember a few years ago the Gills losing all of the last six games when we were favourites to make the play offs in Div 2. I sincerely think the Gills will have enough to be safe. But for goodness sake, let's get the points first before the nerves set in. As JE has said he's going to blood all the squad before the end of the season, maybe the entrance fee should be reduced whilst we have to witness trails.

How do we know what the full reasons why changes were made.We lost at Chesterfield and clearly JE wanted to freshen things up.The loan window shuts in a few days.Maybe JE wants to send Norris or Morris out on loan.I did see someone in a Oxford top going into the players entrance.JE maybe bringing in a replacements with a view to next season for all we know.We failed to win as a team on Saturday the team is strong enough to stay up and will do so.The maths says we can go down but we have still a very good record since the departure of Taylor yes we lost at Chesterfield and home to Barnsley but we are more than able to get the 4-6 points needed to see us safe. There are a lot of teams around the drop zone some will fail to win their games. We can wait for the nerves to take hold of other sides Crawley,Fleetwood,Orient etc all have to win one of those we can and will play to our strengths. These players will battle and the never say die spirit will keep us up.I have always said this season would be a bumpy ride young players lack consistency and will be up and down. This season was about building for the future we had laid a foundation no more no less.Without large scale investment these things take time.Word would have got around the football world that gills are willing to give good young players a chance to play. That should help JE big time in his post season hunt. Most seasons have seen large scale changes this close season we do not need massive rebuilding.JE has the plans in hand give him time to do his job there were always going to be setbacks and still will be.But together we can move forward.
Up the Gills.

I don't mind JE switching the team about, provided we do actually stay up, I'd like to see what we've got too. BUT the kick and rush is going to really annoy me.

Lets be honest if kick and rush works and we get the points everybody would be happy!Look at Graham Taylors Watford with big Ross Jenkins and Luther Blissett! Yes I know that was 35 odd years ago but it was successful! The issue for me is the fact we don't have the players for that style and as a whole that style of play has been banished to the past. Colchesters back line loved that particular approach on Saturday until we changed it with Marquis coming off the bench. What we need is a team to adapt to all types of play be it long and short in time hopefully Justin will achieve that but at the moment we havn't the personnel to do that,so why put square pegs into round holes!

I think the point that's being made here is that kick and rush doesn't work in L1 these days.....and it's rubbish to watch.

As I have said there was no way that Saturdays game went to plan.JE did want the ball in the air so much nor did we. Colchester bossed the game at times we had chances to change that but were unable to on the day.To many had a off day. While around me Loft got the blame for everything Egan,Hoyte,Hess,Dack,Cody and Norris all had poor games in my book Loft made mistakes but was one of the better players. All in all we should be pleased with a point.Things always get turned upside down at this time of year. Strange results happen year after year as the teams at the top suddenly find life hard and some at the bottom find there form.Fans should not get stressed about it.We are as I have said hard to beat and can score goals that alone will keep us up.As for the play off's it was never likely and frankly we would be totally out of our depth had we somehow got promotion.
