gillsconnect.com/s/Gills_News_Desk/Entries/2015/5/18_FORMER_GILLS_GOALIE_COULD_BE_ON_JEDINBURGH_RADAR.htmlI hate to say it but first I think Nelson should stay and fight for his place. He has had a dip in form.JE rightly gave Morris a chance and based on last seasons performances Morris was the better keeper in my view.Of course one or both may make the choice to move on.Would I welcome Bywater if that was the case well of course he did himself no harm at Gills putting in some good performances. But frankly we really do not know JE targets at all.Of course it is likely we could get someone from Newport and given that I believe they purchased a keeper last season it seems he must rate him highly. However I believe his former assistant Dack did hint weeks ago that Justin was only likely to return for one player. Is that the keeper?? Or does he have a eye on someone else it seems only time will tell.

No reason why we shouldn't, but think Morris proved he was as good, if not better than Nelson and Bywater.

Agree as per my other post re Morris, but dont think Nelson will stay to fight, as I am sure he will get offers to be the number 1 elsewhere which he will take at this time in his career.

I wouldn't be unhappy, but if Morris is staying I'd rather he had the place FTB. Also don't see anything to be gained in Bywater over Nelson. Actually, any 2 of those 3 seems a bit extravagant. More usual for a club like ours to have a 2nd string no2, than proper league quality cover. I'd like to think Hadler could give adequate cover short term and if necessary there's always the possibility of an emergency loan. I've no idea what the finances are really like or what Bywater might cost, but I think the money could be better spent elsewhere.
I expect Nelson is looking to go and wouldn't blame him, but don't think we need to splash out on cover for Morris.

I think the contract length is holding Morris back as I guess he wants more than the year on offer. Agree hadler deserves a chance and if as good as they say then would make an adequate number two with as you play technical the loan market if required.

The only trouble I foresee with Having Hadler as number two for the whole season and bringing in a loan for any long term injury would be that at this stage of his career he needs match action. Not sure he would get that other than in front of one man and his dog so to speak. But I can understand where fans are coming from.I largely share the view that at least one of our keepers seem likely to move on.

I think Morris did enough to keep the number one spot so I cannot see either Nelson or Bywater accepting a seat on the bench at their ages. I know nothing about Hadler except what I have read but other people seem to think he would be an acceptable second string and would probably get a few first team appearances in early season cup games to give Edinburgh a look at him before the loan period expires.

One option could be to have Hadler as second choice at the start of the season because there is the league cup and jpt then send him out on loan for the second half of the season. There is always likely to be goalkeepers who were hoping for the number one spot wanting at least a place on the bench as many bigger clubs have 3 or more keepers who would be more than good enough at our level to keeper our lone keeper on his toes.Having just one senior keeper for a whole season could lead to him getting lazy I fear.Need I remind people of the last time we did it I believe was Kelvin Jack that something we need no repeat of.

Bywater is not good enough. He wasn't that good for us. Flaps at crosses although a good shot stopper. We are now being linked (probably won't happen) with Swindons keeper , Wes Fodringham who is out of contract in the summer

I liked Bywater. Apart from a particularly bad error, I thought he did ok and certainly commanded his area better than Nelson ever has. However, Morris did a really good job and I'd be happy with him as no 1 with Hadler and the loan market providing back up.

Me too, Bywater did ok and at least on par with Nelson. Made the mistake against Swindon, I think last minute, but other then that was pretty solid. I still think Morris won't sign unless he can get a deal of over 1 season and can't blame him for that, especially as others offers were said yo be on the table.

Overall goalkeepers' salaries are the lower than those of outfield players. Their careers last longer for a start. I suspect Nelson was important to Martin Allen's project and thinking and that he awarded him a more generous contract. That decision paid off but the situation has changed and the current manager belkieves he can do as well, or better, for less. That would allow him to spend more elsewhere. The negotiations with Morris are probably tough but I don't think we will budge a lot.
I'd be surprised if Bywater fits into the wage structure that Edinburgh has in mind.

Not sure about Bywater. He can be a good shot-stopper but he's prone to some bad errors. Why would we hire a keeper who's deemed not good enough by Millwall or Doncaster ? I actually think it was Bywater's introduction on loan which led to Stuart Nelson's loss of form. It must have been a blow to his confidence when he didn't get preference over Bywater even when fit. Nelson's form certainly dipped when he did get back into the side and I don't think it was entirely down to his injury. I think Gills are trying to have their cake and eat it, offering Morris just a one-year deal with no certainty he'll be number one, and effectively telling Nelson he can go if he's not prepared to play a sub's role. It strongly suggests JE wants someone else (yes, cheaper) in goal, with Morris as number two. Maybe that was always JE's end game when he changed keepers late in the season.
