Can understand Connor wanting to step up into league footy again, but jack to orient - think he can do better than that unless mowing back home is that important.

Been to most London grounds but never Brisbane Road. What is the ground and playing surface like? If it's poor as I suspect that must be a come down for Payne after Peterborough. That and the price tag would seem to be against a move. Wish Essam well - never seemed like he got a real chance with us...

Without being a expert I would say that Orient is a good surface in league two.But below average in our league. It could be that Jack wanting to move south is badly timed as there is so few clubs in our league south of Peterborough. If JED has other plans where he wants to spend the money we simply have to respect that. While I do think Jack could do a job for us he is on the small side for the roll he plays and if the wing backs are going to really push on as it would seem. It would be an advantage to have someone bigger to cover the runner and aid the centre backs when they are pulled out to wide areas.Someone who has Jack abilities or better on the ground that is also OK covering centre back would be ideal.Who knows what is about to happen but the fact that we do not seem to be pushing for Jack to sign fills me with confidence that we are going for someone as good or better.I suspect we will get in a few more faces before the Brighton game at the end of the month.

Good luck to Essam. Would seem like an odd move for Payne though. I'd love to know what the full story is there. Peterborough's not that far away, loads of footballers commute further. I know two Gills season ticket holders who live in Peterborough!
I suspect we dropped out because of the price tag and rightly so IMO. He's transfer listed but in a way that makes it highly unlikely he'll be going anywhere. Very odd.

Would love both back at the club. Two of Allen's biggest mistakes in view, firstly freezing out Payne who he also thought "wasn't big enough" and then Essam, who he didn't rate. I'm hoping we don't go for the big lump in the holding role as that tells me we don't want to play football. Jack is a real player- a passer and a tackler. We need that more than someone to win headers

Not sure we are after a big lump at holding midfield/play maker.Judging on the little info we have and the way we lined up at the weekend I would imagine a player around 6ft who is comfortable on the ball.I still think that is where the major money will be spent wage wise.JED clearly thinks he can get a championship quality player judging from earlier comments. If we are able to get quality in a deep midfield roll I am sure the rest of the side will fall into place. With a squad of around 18-19 players we simply can't afford to tie Aaron Morris to one roll.Given we will have four forwards and 2 goal keepers that only leaves about 12 -13 players for the other 8 places in the team. That means you need at least one utility player. It now appears that Nelson may well stay given his performance at the weekend. I would guess he is now slight favourite to take the number one spot back. That is all he wants, I am not sure he has gone the right way about things. But if we get Nelson back to his best Glenn Morris will have to play really well to prove himself better.

Maybe, just maybe, this is the time there's a place for a really good older professional. Anyone remember Paul Merson in the deep holding role against us for Walsall c. 2004? Was completely shot as a physical specimen, barely moved at all during the course of the game but completely dominated it.

I never understood Jack Payne's departure. I assumed that either he thought Peterborough was a step up (they were a division higher at the time), that he was costing us too much and so we wanted rid, or that he had had a falling out with Mad Dog. Maybe all three were true. I would still be delighted to have someone with his passing ability back in a pivotal midfield role. If Hendon and Hess get him for Orient, they will have done a great deal. Too good for League Two

From memory about 700k reasons why gills let him go.

First time I've heard of such a figure. Clearly lost a lot of value in two years then, if he's going back to League Two.

The fee was undisclosed at the time but Posh Chairman recently "hinted" on Twitter that Payne had cost them £700K. Posh are asking £750k for him so they don't think he's lost value. I can't see him signing for Orient (or anywhere else really) if they intend to stick to that price. Posh have also said this week that nothing is agreed and they are in discussions with several clubs over Payne.
I don't understand why, when a footballer's career is short, Payne would want to take such a step down, when he was doing so well at Peterborough. I know he's said he wants to come home, but footballers often commute long distances, it's not like he'd have a long drive at the end of a 9/10 hour day (like some of us do!)
I think he went to Peterborough in the first place for the money, which is probably why they want to off load him now.

Agree technical and at £750k they are going to find it very hard indeed to offload him. Very few, if any, L1 clubs can pay that and not many championship sides will want him anyway IMO. Can see him staying put and seeing out his contract and reaping the salary, unless the price tag is substantially dropped and he can get a good deal elsewhere.

I understand Peterborough do not allow their players to commute - they have to live in the local area.
