Ninth place Gills arrive at Glanford Park to take on Scunthorpe in 16th position and safe from relegation on 53 points for their penultimate match of the 2014/15 season. Gills away form has been reasonable lately with only one defeat in ten and Scunthorpe’s home form is also good with only one defeat in their last eight.
Gills boss Justin Edinburgh gives Oliver Muldoon a rare start and leaves Bradley Dack on the bench with striker John Marquis giving Luke Norris another chance to star alongside top scorer Cody McDonald.
Gills stating line-up: Glenn Morris, John Egan, Max Ehmer, Leon Legge, Jermaine McGlashan, Brennan Dickenson, Doug Loft, Jake Hessenthaler, Oliver Muldoon, Luke Norris and Cody McDonald.
Gills substitutes: Stuart Nelson, Gavin Hoyte, Amari’I Bell, Aaron Morris, Josh Pritchard, Bradley Dack and John Marquis. Grey day with the rain coming down at Glanford Park and Gills kitted out all in white as both teams and fans stand for a minute’s silence in remembrance of the Bradford City Football Stadium Fire Disaster when 56 fans lost their lives.
In the first minute great ball through to Cody who powers a fine shot on target saved by Scunny goalkeeper
2 minutes: GOAL for Gills by Luke Norris who received the ball from Cody from a cross from Dickenson and a great strike by Norris for one of the fastest goals of the season

SCUNTHORPE 0 v GILLS 1 (Luke Norris)
4 minutes: Jermaine McGlashan through on goal but stopped by a great tackle from Scunny defender. Gills well on top as Cody McDonald runs through again after receiving a superb ball from Norris who is on fire Cody cuts inside to fire a shot off with his right foot but brilliantly saved by Boyce and stops Gills going two up inside five minutes.
Scunthorpe look all at sea and very dodgy at the back as Gills looking well up for the game remembering that Scunny beat Gills comfortably at Priestfield by 0-3 with Doug Loft sent off in the first half.
11 minutes: GOAL! and Scunny equalise as Max Ehmer gets turn every whiich way as Hakeeb Adelakun hammers high past Glenn Morris

THE IRON 1 v GILLS 1
15 minutes: Gary McSheffrey looking very sharp and blending well with Hakeeb Adelakun giving the Gills defence something to think about. Explosive start to this match and Gills could have scored two or three but Scunny settling now and the game is more even. Scunny's John Lundstram whips a shot that flashes wide of the post from 25 yards as the rain pours down with lightning flashes.
18 minutes: GOAL as Scunny go into the lead. Gary McSheffrey has yards of space runs through unchallenged and rounds Glenn Morriis for their second. This is very disappointing given the start Gills had.

THE IRON 2 v GILLS 1
22 minutes: This game looks like there is a few goals in it but the heavy rain and worsening pitch conditions are making things very difficult for the players. Good day for 'kick and rush' tactics! Not a day for short passing as the ball is not rolling evenly.
26 minutes: The referee has stopped the game! Referee Haines is now talking with the managers and the players have walked off the pitch

PLAY HALTED with volunteers 'forking' the pitch and the rain is easing. THERE WILL BE A PITCH INSPECTION at 15.45.

THE IRON 2 (Hakeeb Adelakun (11), Gary McSheffrey (19)) v GILLS 1 (Luke Norris (2))
Both sets of players have returned to the field at 15.55 and play will resume but if heavy rain returned it is possible the game would be abandoned. More rain forecast info from local sources.
19 minutes left of the first half and play gets underway but ball not rolling well or bouncing on the heavy pitch. Players slipping and sliding all over the place. Tremendous stop from Glenn Morris from Iron's top scorer Paddy Madden as a slip from Gills defence let him in on goal.
The pitch is not playable in many fans opinion and it is a good thing that this is not an important game in respect of promotion or relegation. Players cannot run with the ball as it stops in the mire!

THE IRON 2 v GILLS 1
33 minutes: Doug Loft runs on but the ball stays in the middle of the park and looks around bemused. The referee is ignoring the chants and complaints. Game fairly even but you get the feeling that it will only be a matter of time before someone makes a mistake - let's hope it is a Scunny error!
38 minutes: Nice run from Cody McDonald but he loses the ball not via a defender but from the pitch holding onto the ball. Shot from Doug Loft on the edge of the area after receiving the ball from Cody but it goes over wide of Daniels in the Scunny goal.
41 minutes: Corner from Scunny picked up by McSheffrey but Gils defence crowd him out and clear to McGlashan. Gills attack through McGlashan and Doug Loft who feeds Cody but cleared high up the pitch for a good chance for McSheffrey. He was clear of the Gills defence but conditions hold the ball up and Gills defence get back and cover.
42 minutes: Cross by Dickenson and Cody has a header that was well saved by Luke Daniels in the Scunny goal. 'Orrible 'tup North as the sky goes dark and the clouds blacker - there looks like rain on the way.
45 minutes: Gills defence beaten but Oliver Muldoon saves the day with a last ditch tackle. One minute of added time - the referee is having a laugh! Players on both sides are not into this and fans will not blame them.

All hands to the task as both sets of subs are out forking the pitch and brushing off surface water. The pitch is obviously making good play difficult but Gills have to concentrate and possibly change tactics employing the long ball as Scunny are. You get the feeling that Gills could get something from this game. The Iron looked dodgy at the back when under pressure and with McGlashan and Dickenson Gills have two fast runners that could latch onto the long ball. The stadium announcer gives the soaked attendance as 3,763 that includes a credible348 Gills fans.
SECOND HALF STARTS: THE IRON 2 v GILLS 1
Gills on the attack straight away with Dickenson firing an effort from his favoured left boot but Luke Daniels saves.
50 minutes: The Iron should really have gone three one up when Madden gave the ball to Hakeeb Adelakun inside the area and unchallenged who sends a poor effort wide of the Morris's near post.
52 minutes: Clenn morris tries a long clrearance but it goes straight through to Luke Daniels in the opposite goal on one bounce sending spay and mud into the air.
Doug Loft doing his best to play the ball through the middle and the pitch looks like it's recovering from the rain pounding.
Boss Edinburgh acts and Bradley Dack coming on to replace Oliver Muldoon and 30 minutes left in the game for Gills to get something as they drop from 9th to 12th in the table.
McGlashan doing his best with runs on a fairly dry wing but at the moment the crosses are just not happening for the team. He gets into the penalty and tries a shot but wide.

THE IRON 2 v GILLS 1
63 minutes: Free kick for Gills taken by Loft but it goes over the heads of assembled Gills players who were positioned deep in the area.
65 minutes: Corner for Scunny taken by Gary McSheffrey but comes to nothing as Gills clear it upfield. Scunny send on sub Kevin van Veen for Robinson - perhaps Marquis could come on soon? Bradley Dack sends a shot pass the top corner but it is end to end stuff now as Scunny attack but although turns the Gills defence the attack comes to nothing.
68 minutes: Subs all round with Gary McSheffrey coming off for Scunny's Syres and Gills boss Edinburgh sends on John Marquis and Gavin Hoyte on for McGlashan and Legge.
70 minutes: Magic time time reached and the game should now last the distance without being abandoned even if the heavy rain returns.
72 minutes: Bradley Dack gives away a free-kick because of a crude two-footed tackle but gets away with a yellow card - his ninth of the season. Scunny player also gets a card for another crude bundle off the ball. Referee obviously taking the view that weather conditions are making player 'mistakes'.

THE IRON 2 v GILLS 1
10 minutes remaining: Luke Norris, who has had a good game plus a goal, completes a great turn beating the defender but another covers well and the ball reaches Daniels in the Scunny goal. Good effort but no reward.
82 minutes: Free-kick from The Iron from 20 yards that goes wide of Glenn Morris's goal and from the goal kick Gills go on the attack through Jake Hessenthaler and Cody McDonald takes the ball but is brought down in the penalty area but referee Haines waves away appeals for the spot kick. The pitch conditions might have influenced the ref although it looked like a penalty from the stands.
84 minutes: Free-kick, well out for Gills, some 30 yards, taken by Luke Norris. Brilliant effort that is tipped over by Luke Daniels in the Scunny goal. That would have have been a superb equalising goal but not too be, Doug Loft receives a yellow card and that is his ninth of the season. From the free-kick Scunny top scorer Paddy Madden misses from three yards out with a side-footed effort.
Six minutes of added time but Gills never came close as the minutes ebbed away to a defeat - let us hope for a home win next week to end a satisfactory season - Notts County next at Priestfield who could be relegated with a defeat.
What a pity in this game after such a great start from the Gills then allowing The Iron to come back into the game via poor defensive errors and then a 20 minute delay through rain that reduced the match to something of a lottery. Gills failed to force the home side into errors and failed to creating enough chances. In all honesty Scunny should have won easily as they wasted chances to go further ahead.

Thanks iblue. Listened to the match on radio Kent and the match was really disrupted badly by the adverse weather conditions. After such a good start we seemed to lose our way. Sounds like the ref made some poor decisions as well.

Great report. Thanks IBlue. When the volunteers were on the pitch trying to get the water off did you think 'forking hell'? Just wondering .....COYG

Many thanks iblue, top report as ever, sounds as if perhaps the game should have been abandoned "players being unable to run with the ball" due to it sticking in the mire. Wonder if the officials may have produced a different ruling had there been an important development dependent upon on the out come of the game.

I wonder what went on at Scunthorpe on Saturday? There is an article in the Medway Messenger in which Edinburgh says "We conducted ourselves correctly as we always do, but I am not sure other parties, once the game continued, did. It's quite a lengthy article so I am not going to repeat it here because it could cause a problem with copyright etc. I am sure that there are people who were there on Saturday and have read this article, may be able to shed some light on it
