Did anyone go to the game today against Bromley? If so what did you make of the four trialists that was on show? I'm mostly interested in the young centre-half/ full-back Jack Baldwin who currently plays for Faversham Town. Is he worth keeping on for another couple of pre-season games? Also what did you make of the lad from Welling Jack Obersteller, the striker from Hendon Gregory N'Goyi and the Greek trialist Dionisis Liosatos?
A question mark also goes to why trialist from the Ashford game, goalkeeper Jake Cole didn't feature? This is because Hessy said that he would give him another run out against Bromley. Does anyone know the reason for him not turning out?
One last thing, I went to watch Faversham Town's first pre-season friendly this afternoon versus Dover and there is a centre-half that plays for Faversham that I believe could easily make the step up to the Football League. He's names Ashley Brown and I'm surprised he has not been picked up by anyone higher up the pyramid as of yet! Not only can he play at centre-half but he can also play full-back either side. To make him even more versatile he played the second half between the sticks (a young Phil Jagielka, maybe?).

Jack Baldwin......... Did OK reminds me of Gary Breen. But we're well covered at centre half Jack Obersteller..... Quite impressed .Two footed and didn't put a foot wrong. worth another look Gregory N'Goyi..... He's quick but won't score many (if any ) goals in the League. Release Dionisis Liosatos.... Most interesting thing is his name. Nowhere near good enough. Release

We need to find someone special and N'Goyi is quick but you can find that type of player everywhere. He also lacks that final ball/finish. I think in the league he would go missing for about 80 minutes.

I have no problem with trialists but surely we could be trying out a few of better quality!! maher is on trial at Yeovil so why are we trialing non league players??? Would we not be better off giving trials to players like Rene Howe, Febian Brandy and seeing if they still have something to offer rather than players who aren't going to get a look in once the season starts!!

I'm with you there TT. And why are we trialling defenders when we are fairly well covered there? Surely we should be trialling strikers and left-mid players only. And then only one or 2 per game. We have 7 new players in our squad. I'd have thought they need all our friendlies to get to know eachother before we give game time to players who are very unlikely to be anywhere near our first team. Rant over coyrrgsg

Agree totally bazinoz - most (if not all of the trialists, especially defenders) on show so far will not be given a contract in my opinion. They are well supported anyway by established Gills players around them in the penalty area. They are given the chance because if Hess uncovered a 'gem' they would be cheap and cost little in wages.
However, taking your point, it does nothing to help the team 'gel' when these players are not likely to be around for long. Potential strikers and midfielders are another issue and can more easily be assessed because up front they are more exposed.
Yesterday N'Goyi was average at best, played like Ipoua but without even his limited skill and missed a couple of headers that any self respecting striker should have buried especially if a job was in the offering. There must be a few strikers with league experience wanting a trial but most league two teams are in the same boat and amongst them Gills have little money for wages which possibly rules out trialling established players.
Despite Gills not being on Dover's Christmas card list Scally could have pick up 45 goals in 49 games, Adam Birchall, instead of offering (apparently) £15,000 in two installments. Adam went to Swindon for between £50,000 down and a further £25,000 depending on appearances and goals. Dover originally wanted a laughable £250k.Unfortunately we all know what is going to happen next and that he will be one of the division's top scorers. No doubt he will score against us when Gills play Swindon.
Gills will probably end up in the loan market for a striker from a club in a higher division, cheaper option and therefore these current trialists are probably a waste of time and effort.
In my opinion we should be concentrating on getting the players match fit and starting to get a regular first eleven out every time with a 'second' reserve eleven in these pre-season matches. Not a 'pick and mix' approach and certainly not keep introducing a lot of 'time wasters' in trialists.
However, every team does it in the lower leagues and manager Hess is no exception. At the end of this pre-season exercise hopefully the players will be match fit but I very much doubt they Hess will have a 'settled' first eleven in tune with one another if the experience of the Ashford and Bromley games are anything to go by.
But still we Gills live in hope - four pre-season games this coming week!

Agree with some of what you say, iblue, but remember we have a silly 14 game schedule and we've only played 2, so giving a couple of trialists a run out at this stage isn't the end of the earth. Agree though that trialing defenders is somewhat bizarre. I personally think we need to move one of our centre backs on, and with fish and frampton, we have cover at full back so not sure what we're trying to achieve there. Whole hartedly agree re: birchall, though there is hope until he actually signs for the swine/ dons. I hope scally goes back with a proper bid as like you, I feel that Adam is a 20+ goals man and the guy who could fire gills to league one

Yes, hessisgod you are right re Birchall and he hasn't actually signed for SWindon yet. Both them and Wimbledon have had undisclosed bids accepted (belived to be £50,000 down with an add on of up to a further £25k depending on appearances and goals) personal terms have to be agreed but Dover reckon one of these deals will go through. Wimbledon could well be favourites unless Gills offer more? Personally I think Gills will end up with a loan striker hopefully from a Championship side and we might well need someone of experience to help bring Kedwell along who has never played at football league level. On his showing at Ashford Danny needs a few hours on the pitch to get match sharp and reminded me of Bob Taylor when he first arrived - you might remember he was not very mobile at the start of his Gills career but he turned out one of the best strikers we ever had.
