Well the thing with Rooney is I believe he should be played in the centre attacking midfield position or a third striker who sits behind and collects the ball. He is good at running at their defence. This would eliminate the need to defend as he would be the person to collect long balls and not to go back and stop the defence. You can have one or maybe even two players not needing to tackle depending on the opposition. However, if say Weston too is playing then I don't think it works, I would go for Rooney over Weston because Weston seems out of it atm. The thing is we won't know until the start of the season about him but I do hope his game has improved. I think some people forget how young he is.

Hang on a sec....so you'd play Rooney in a 4-3-3? as one of the forward 3 which becomes a 4-5-1 when you are defnding so Rooney will be responsible for their fullback which he can't do. He can't be the person to collect long balls as he is not strong enough especially with a big centre half at his back. You'd like to see him as an attacking midfielder, what in a 4-4-2? I magine if the opposition plays 3 central midfielders? suicidal! The only position I feel Rooney could play is the link man in a 4-4-1-1 but with Birchall and Kedwell I don't think this will happen. We'll have to agree to disagree I'm afraid as there will be no position for Rooney and I certainly wouldn't change the shape of a team to accomodate him. A 10 minute sub when we are losing....that is what I see Lukes role being

At least Roo seems to be improving and worth a go unlike others he has a long way to go but any improvement must be welcome. With our midfield looking stronger we may need to play three up at home from time to time if sides fear us and put 10 mens behind the ball.

I hope he does improve and push for a place as competition for places is a must but I don't think he's good enough but I sincerely hope I'm wrong. I see him as a poor mans John Hodge....John was excellent when he came on but whenever Pulis gave him a start he failed....don't get me wrong Rooney isn't anywhere near the same class as Hodge but Hess surely can't consider starting him....a 10 minute sub is Rooney...Just my opinion but I must be wrong, and I hope it turns out this way, because all of this forum think he's great and should be accomodated.

The problem with rooney is giving him a team responsibility to track back/defend. Yes, he is brilliant attacking and creates chances, scores goals but that "free role" does not fit into our 4-4-2 formation. All the way upto being in the first team he was a striker who played in the hole and then to break into the team was converted into a right midfielder. Against weak opponents, this is fine as the defense can handle all their attacking threats on their own but in League 2 you cannot let players run off you. I sympathise with him though as he is constantly asked to play in a different position which he has not mastered e.g. at Ashford playing head of the diamond but kept coming deep to get the ball/involved.
All this leads me to believe that next season he will still be on the bench but will be brought on in the second half if we need a goal and you can say to him forget about defending, go and win us this match.

Lets face it. Did Rooney turn up any trees on loan at Eastbourne??? No! If he has a future in the game i feel he needs a full season on loan at an Ebbsfleet or someone like that, playing every week, building his match stamina and if he has a future with Gills he needs to stand out at that level! I think Stefan Payne also needs to do the same! Both need to go away and prove they can hack playing a full season! similar to what Birchall has done where he's had to take a step back to move forward!

Rooney - how often do Gillingham fans have this conversation
Yes he has skills and ability above most but is he a liability.
What is his best position, can he defend ?
Should we loan him out, is he no more than an impact player ?
In the pubs and in stands this conversation will be had all season.
I think as an attacking option he is possibly ,right now, our most gifted player, I also think he struggles with the rigidness of a set 4-4-2 formation. He is not a true wide player but can do a job cutting in from either wing. I still feel he is not a definite starter unless we want to play him upfront or in the hole, neither I think Hess will do. We now have two new strikers plus Oli and the very average Payne. I would have him as our third choice striker and if we want to play a man behind the front two..its either him or Weston...overall another season on the bench being asked to change a game with 15 mins to go. If he doesn`t start soon I feel he may look elsewhere, which would be a real shame as he does have talent and can unlock defences. I thought when he first came on the scene he would be a player in the Paul Shaw mode...he possibly could be in time, though it must be said Shaw was one of the best players this club has ever had.
Never a prophet in your own land...we`ll miss him if he goes.
The CatMan...sort it out Hess

Great post The CatMan, Rooney is a tremendous talent who could become a fantastic player for the Gills, he is only 20 and could be the man this season. What he does need is a proper run in the side and for the fans to get behind him and that is something I would expect from all Gills supporters.

The main problem is finding what position he should be in a team that usually plays 4-4-2. Although rooney is very good, he is not good enough to have a team built round him e.g. adel taraabt.

Look, I'm going to try and not be too negative any more because it clearly upsets a lot of you, but these ratings - and the ones from Ashford - are a bit OTT. They should look better than their opposition, and 9/10 in a pre-season friendly against teams four leagues below is really nothing special...

I think to be fair, you can only rate the players for their performances against what was put in front of them.
In terms of the Rooney debate, I've criticised him for some time. Frankly I've never seen what the fuss is about from some fans. He has no end product and plays like a kid wanting all the glory. I want him to do well as he's a local lad, but I just don't see it?
The only thing I can think of is, he came to us as a striker. Maybe we should try him there given the lack of strength in depth there

As stated many times before by me he is not a selfish player. He is young and unfortunately if you're young and an impact sub you are going to get restless and always feel the need that you have to score every game. I have seen extensively over last games he has changed. Thus, I am hoping this has been fixed.
