Not much interesting except Birchall was given 28 whilst Oli was given 11. Might I ask why?? I hope these numbers don't reflect any squads in mind with Richards, Weston and Oli being in the numbers 1 to 11 section.
1 Ross Flitney 2 Barry Fuller 3 Andy Frampton 4 Charlie Lee 5 Simon King 6 Garry Richards 7 Chris Whelpdale 8 Jack Payne 9 Danny Kedwell 10 Curtis Weston 11 Dennis Oli 12 Joe Martin 14 Luke Rooney 15 Matt Lawrence 16 Matt Fish 17 Danny Spiller 18 Danny Jackman 19 Lewis Montrose 20 Callum Davies 21 Dean Rance 22 Connor Essam 23 Stefan Payne 24 Jack Evans 25 Alex Brown 26 Daren Hawkes 27 Tom Brunt 28 Adam Birchall

After rereading the article noticed Birchall requested the 28 shirt so no worries there

Birchall usually wears the number 10 shirt but as that was taken by Weston when everyone returned to pre-season training so he's settled for the number 28 shirt (2+8 = 10 approach may be behind his shirt number choice)

A few years ago I went down the training for the first day back. All the bags of kit were laid out in a line if the player was at Gills the previous season that bag was held back. They could take any of the spares but a few were held back for special players (maybe they had already spoken to the manager asking for that shirt.)This was before Hess took over as manager so thing could be different but if you look at the photo's when the kits came out Whelpdale had the number 7 then.I remember seeing it.So Oli for example getting the number 11 is meaningless same as MacCammon getting 9 last year.My guess is that Birchall was signed too late same as Bayo and Lawrence last year to claim the number 10 shirt.

Would be nice to see the starting eleven being 1-11 but in the age of the squad number thats only ever going to be on a rare one off occasion if ever. Along with you going down to the training ground I remember when skysports ran a set of vignettes on the Gills when they followed them doing pre-season a couple of years back with players asking what numbers are available and the kit man saying you'll have to ask the manager if you want to change number. Squad numbers are issued usually on the first day back of pre-season and you can usually get an idea of what number they are when they are wearing their training kit just like the photo that was taken of all the new signings at training the other day showed proof of this. Still pretty sure Birchall will have his number 10 shirt next season. I know its only a number and its not that important but Weston seems to change his number each season (26 to 4 and now to 10). Either that or he'll be moved on like I have a funny feeling Oli may well have been come this time next year.
