Seriously now - I read a few Gills forums and on most of them, anyone who doesn't blindly love the team is immediately dismissed as not a "real fan".
Last time I checked, supporting a team - especially Gillingham - is about more than just winning every game. The disappointment is always there, yet this season, for some reason, there are so many wildly optimistic people who refuse to have anything said against the manager and the team.
I'm one of the most anti-Hessenthaler fans on this site, but that doesn't make me any less of a supporter than anyone else. Somehow five people (or one person five times) has been so offended by my negativity that I have a karma rating of -5 on this site. I'm not at all bothered by that (pretty pointless system, means nothing), but just because someone disagrees with a blind love of the team doesn't make them less of a fan.
Chiefly this season I desperately want Gillingham to be promoted. I want that more than anything. I just doubt that we have the right squad and manager for that to be a reality. I'll still go to matches whenever I can (although I live a long way away, so it's not as often as I'd like), and I still get behind the team. At 3pm today, I will still have that feeling of wanting us to win so much, but at the end of the day, I'm expecting to be disappointed this season.
Why, in the eyes of so many, does this make me less of a fan? Surely the fact I think it's gonna be shitee and I still go says something?!

There are many gills fans with their heads completely lodged up their own arses when it comes to this club.
Unfortunately, the delusion leads to a genuine belief that we are a premiership club in waiting,
There are morons who will not have a single word against this club, if we lost every single game 4-0 end ended up in the Ryman League they would still be sat there, looking like complete tools, clapping and cheering our latest defeat wildly like an over-enthusiastic blue-bus passenger.
I too have concerns about the squad, Stimson was raped for signing non-league players but its fine for Hess to do exactly the same, as this is Hessenthaler, club legend, and he is beyond all criticism.
These idiots also choose to blame Scally for everything. He has backed us big-time for this season, so he deserves credit for that, but sadly if we end up in the relegation zone at christmas and sack hess, people will be saying "scally out" and such shitee.
FWIW, I think we will do well this season, but I will not pass judgement on the players or manager until atleast 10 games, by which we will have an indication of things.
I know this post wont make me popular, but I dont care, unlike some of the deluded fans who think they are better than other fans, I thankfully have a lot more going on in my life other than GFC.

Its not about supporting everything the club does. For example, I think scally has done brilliantly this summer, but he made major mistakes in the stadium building and is still too ready to fall out with people. What I find odd is the people who were anti-Hess from almost day 1. I also find odd the idea that we had a divine right to go up last season- only 3 out of the last 32 relegated clubs managed that and given injury troubles and the fact that our squad had plenty of bottlers means we did ok. We know we're a player short with birchall's injury, but given the amazing summer we've had, I can't believe people are still negative

Last comment before I head off to the game.
Hessisgod, Im not negative, I am being a realist.
Until we see a minimum of 10 league games, I am not going to get too excited. My gut-feeling is that we should do well, and will do well, however I am still very concerned by the fact that we have a single full-time striker straight out of non-league as our principle goal-threat.
I am also concerned by the lack of a replacement for Ian Hendon. This should have been a priority in my eyes. If only Pennock was available, mind you if he was I would want him as manager!

Agree with you about both things. What you're doing though is constructively criticising. What I've got a problem with is people who are negative whatever we do, for example fans who were moaning on the day we made 6 good signings. Unbelievable

But, hessisgod, given the subsequent injury to Birchall, those of us saying that we hadn't signed enough strikers that day are bang on.
I am certainly not negative about everything we do, but I can't see how we can get promoted with just Kedwell up front on his own. That's all I've ever said about the signings really. The most important positions are goalkeeper and striker, and yet they are the ones Hessenthaler has prioritised the least this summer.
But, hey, we're winning so far, so it's so far so good.
And, yes, before all my many detractors have a go, I'm not there today. Why? Well, I'm at work, 250 miles away. Still wanting a win though, albeit from a distance. Will be there whenever I can all season, but I have lots of other things going on in my life that restrict that for the time being...

Based on today, you'd see the importance of a quality defence, I think the thing is, everyone at the club knows we need a striker. People need to wait till 31/8 before judging. I'd rather wait and get the right player than someone for the sake of it

But why did it take Birchall getting injured for us to need another striker? We needed to sign at least three in the first place.
Pleased to hear the defence did well, but there's only one new face in that back four, and from my mates at the game, they were hardly tested that much...

Not tested that much? ?? I'd hate to see them tested. 2nd half they had a lot to do, especially after Rooney sending off. Who's to say we wouldn't have signed another striker even if birch was fit? Maybe we'd have user the loan system instead? Either way, it's still several weeks before the deadline. I'm sure chelsea, Liverpool, man city etc haven't finished their business yet and Redknapp certainly will want to do a last minute deal!

I think it was pretty clear we weren't going to sign another striker with a fit Birchall from what Hessenthaler and Scally said. And if they had that thought, you'd have thought they might have worked extra hard to get it done ASAP.
Yes, there's a few weeks to go, but we have some very tough games this month, so the sooner the better.

Did hear an interesting rumour that scally has been holding on for another striker until Cody has completed a move elsewhere
