(I hope this is taking as constructive rather than me being dismissed as a bitter anti-Hess fan, despite not commenting about Hess himself)
My general view of the match was that for the first 15 minutes or so we tended to pump it long and Kedwell did well to win the ball and flick it on - alas no one was on hand to run onto it. When the ball went over their defence and Kedwell was able to run onto it, he was out wide and ended up crossing the ball into the box to no one. We then started to pass it between us a bit more, with plenty of long ball still mixed in.
On the whole, until the red card, we looked comfortable but didn't seem to break Cheltenham down too much and the goal came out of the blue. Looking at the TV replay, it was a fantastic turn and shot into the corner from Montrose. Defensively we looked solid thanks to a combination of good performances from our defensive players against a team maybe lacking a spark up front.
Another positive is the fact we appear to have a number of leaders on the pitch in the form of Lee, Frampton and Lawrence. Maybe we'll have a bit more of the mental strength this season that was badly lacking in the run in last season. It was good to see Flitney keep a clean sheet with a comfortable performance - knowing how people got on Julian's back whenever he made a mistake, Flitney has maybe bought himself some time from those pre-season who decided he isn't up to the job as his last name isn't Brown.
But on to the desent and general moaning - literally.... In the first half, there was an incident where we maybe should have had a corner but the ref decided it was a goal kick. Within seconds, Lee was effing and blinding at the referee and was joiined a second or so later by Frampton and Lawrence.... I assume they were effing and blinding since I was too far away to hear, but I don't expect Lee to have been saying "Erm, a quiet word in your ear dear referee. Although I respect your decision, I feel it may have been incorrect and would politely ask you to reconsider"... Throughout the entire game the three of them were constantly 'talking' to the referee and I am not surprised when Lee in the second half picked up a card for arguing.
I am always put off whenever players moan and complain at a referee since they will never change their minds anyway and any cards received are simply soft, avoidable cards. My concern is that considering they are combatative players who will mistime tackles at times, there will be times that those players will find themselves sent off - the first for desent and the second for the first mistimed tackle. As I said above, those three especially are leader type players and it sets a bad image for the rest of the squad. I would like to think Hess would have a word but knowing how Hess himself used to complain at the referee, I expect Hess to dismiss it all as the players showing passion.
This general moaning went into overkill after the red card. What we needed was for the players to keep calm, get hold of the ball and try to pass it around and launch controlled attacks (and we did have a few chances when down to 10 men). I think we handed over a lot of the control of the game by the way we then argued every decision that went against us instead of accepting the decision and getting back to organise defending the free kick. Meanwhile Cheltenham seemed to focus with the idea that maybe they could sneak a goal and a point afteral, while we were putting too much mental energy into arguing rather than playing the game.
The moaning aside (the title of this thread was supposed to be double meaning), I know Jackman isn't rated by all, but I really think he should be starting on the left. Spiller spent most of his time chasing balls down the right (with Whelpdale also on the same side of the pitch) and middle rather than where he was supposed to be. I fear that if we continue with Spiller, Martin will come unstuck if facing a tricky, pacey winger with no back up. Jackman will stick to the wing more, can provide cover for Martin as well as actually cross the ball for Kedwell to hopefully get his head onto it - things Spiller, Weston or Rooney cannot provide. Hess said at the end of last season we needed a new left winger in the absence of Palmer and Barcham so is a left winger on the radar or is Hess content with Spiller? We got away with it yesterday but against better teams?
Surprised not to see either Oli or Payne on the bench as back up to Kedwell. If Kedwell had got injured... .... ... ...
