Fantastic away win...
Good drive until I hit Stafford then crawled to the Crewe turnoff...booked into my hotel then off to the ground to meet the lads who had come up by train and were a few pints ahead of me, I did struggle to catch them up...
two pounds thirty a pint, this would be the theme for the day, continually discussing how expensive the Blues Rock is , The Crown in Rochester...I think we had the conversation 30 times...
To the game, we know Crewe is a difficult place to come , they will at times get the ball down and pass, pass and pass again, a Div 2 Arsenal.
We started unbelievably well, two up, cracking strike from Whelpdale, followed by a tidy finish by Spiller. Crewe did their passing thing and probably deserved a goal pre half time but their best chance hit the bar having ripped us apart. Second period we were dominating with Lee and Weston inches wide. then Crewe scored..i felt slightly against the run of play. As ever we then defended too deep, Hess and Trigger screaming for us to play a higher line. Crewe had chances but we kept them out, Barry off the line and Flitney saving well. Crewe's support was poor but the Gills were in good voice, sounded like there was many more than the official 300ish.
Flitney - 8 - two superb stops, kicking good, very good start to his Gills career.
Barry - 7 - better than at brighton, saw a couple of glimpses of him pushing forward, helped that Spiller played in front of him.
Lawrence - 8 - very good again, non nonsense defending
Frampton - 8 - as above, i like the fact the team know exactly what he wants...he is a superb signing
Martin - 7 - again decent performance, couple of clumsy passes.
Lee - 7 - bustling and in their faces, very akin to a young Hess , 'are you Heesie in disguise' sung after he ploughed through their left back
Montrose - 6 - was possibly the weakest of our midfield, not so full of energy, couple of stray passes that could have been costly. I would like him to use his height and size more.
Whelpdale - 7 - superb goal...
Spiller - 7 - ran himself into the ground, was everywhere challenged for everything...can't fault his effort.
Kedwell - 9 - the best performance I've seen from a loan striker in years...chased everything, won ball after ball he had no right to get anywhere near. There is not a selfish bone in his body, all for the team...if he'd scored a goal I would have given him a 10
Weston - 7 - unlucky not to start, I think we'll seem him versus Barnet
Fish - looks big and quick...he'll get his chance
Payne - 7 - gave them something else to worry about ...pace...no Bruce Lee tackling just harried every defender...the words choke in my mouth but ...he could be growing on me
Hess - 8 - well done, last year we would have lost this game...different feeling altogether now.
£1.75 a bottle of Coroner...the conversation continued
The CatMan..sort it out Hess
