Friday midnight brings new rules on football betting when all professional footballers, from the Premier League down of the current structure, are banned from betting on any aspect of the game.
These new rules were ratified at the Football Association’s AGM that took place in May this year and will apply to Gills players and all those participating in the top eight tiers of English football. That is the Premier League, Championship, Leagues One and Two; Conference and top Northern, Southern and Isthmian Leagues and the new rules cover betting on all games around the World.
Under previous rules players were only banned from betting on competitions in which their parent club was involved but under the new ruling players will be unable to pass on inside information to a third party who uses it for betting.
At the end of the 1998-99 season Gills Chairman Paul Scally was fined a record £10,000 + costs by the Football Association for breaching betting rules concerning the Division Two Play-off Final against Manchester City a game that Gills lost on penalties.

Another unenforceable rule and as to insider gambling again unless they are willing to spend thousands on legal costs it very really gets a conviction. Lifetime bans possibly only deterrent that's if not already the rule.

Instinctively it feels right and TBH I would have thought it was "guidance" clubs should be giving to players anyway - don't bet on a any football and you won't get into trouble. Regardless of any fixing, just seems sensible that footballers don't bet on football.
However, betting is clearly ingrained among footballers and as Muppet says how are they going to enforce it? Even if you can stop footballers placing the bets themselves how are you going to stop their mum/friend/dog putting the bets on for them?
I predict some poor lower/non league player will get and early heavy penalty while the top players are never touched.

Agree technical, lower league players will get fines equating to half a years salary whilst premier league half a weeks wages, it should all be relative and if div 1/2 players end up being fined say 60k then premier league stars say 2m as that may hurt a little.
