JPTrophy Area Quarter Final: Gills team: Stuart Nelson, Matt Fish, John Egan, Leon Legge, Joe Martin, Jake Hessenthaler, Michael Doughty, Doug Loft, Antonio German, Brennan Dickenson and Luke Norris. Gills subs: subs: Glenn Morris, Danny Kedwell, Jermaine McGlashan, Bradley Dack and Gavin Hoyte (only five allowed for the JPT competition).
Minutes silence observed before the start. The rain has made the pitch difficult with the ball moving quickly off the surface.
5 minutes: Fairly even start with Gills marginally the better side. John Egan fires in the first effort on goal that was blocked inside the Crawley area.
7 minutes: Loft out to Dickenson on the left who put over a cross for German that was cleared by Crawley defence.
Gills attack duo of Luke Norris and Antiono German have only one goal between them this season - Kedwell on the bench has 5 and Jermain McGlashan has still to find the net.
11 minutes: Crawley starting to get their act together and have won two corners - both cleared well by Legge. Gavin Tomlin to Smith and a shot from 20 yards that went over Nelson's bar.
14 minutes: Tomlin to McCloud and Crawley looked dangerous but final effort curled wide.
15 minutes: First corner for Gills taken by Hessenthaler and into the near post just missed by Egan - good effort.

CRAWLEY 0 v GILLS 0
17 minutes: Great ball forward by Doughty but Matt Fish failed to get the final ball over to the danger area. Gills looking good through the middle for a change but the final ball is missing.
18 minutes: That man McCloud, who always seems to test the Gills when he plays against Gills, has a close header just wide.
19 minutes: Crawley's Edwards pushed over by Jake Hessenthaler in the area and PENALTY. McCloud, with a jinking run, scores for Crawley sending Nelson the wrong way.

CRAWLEY 1 v GILLS 0
Slightly against the run of play that Crawley goal but they have scored and Gills are now up against it. There were no objections or protests from Gills players when the penalty was given by referee Sheldrake.
22 minutes: Another Hessenthaler corner taken short to Loft and Hess gets it back and crosses to the far post where its met by Egan's but his effort was saved by Ashdown in Crawley's goal
23 minutes: Gills on the attack which is good to see even though they are a goal down which must have been a blow. German trys a left-footed shot on the turn that skips over the wet turf causing Ashdown to hurry in saving.
27' Captain Doug Loft runs quickly into the area and beats a defender but his final cross was deflected wide for a corner.
Must say that at the moment Gills are looking the better outfit but unfortunately its goals that count.
29 minutes: Loft is playing well and despite giving away the penalty Hessenthaler is not showing any lack of confidence.
30 minutes: Martin to German to Dickenson in a good Gills move but no finish in the danger area.

CRAWLY 1 v GILLS 0
38 minutes: Dangerous corner for Crawley and saved by Nelson from a low cross. Seconds later Tomlin fires in a great shot that was saved by Nelson palming away for a corner. The corner came to nothing as McCloud shoots high and wide over the bar.
Gills are marginally playing the better of two poor teams - but that is no comfort as the lack of shots on target by Gills is a big worry. Peter Taylor has to look to put on Kedwell, McGlashan and Bradley Dack in the second period to generate chances.
42 minutes: Luke Norris neatly flicks the ball up inside the area and flashes a great shot across the Crawley goal that had Ashdown beaten - good effort but no cigar as they say.
44 minutes: Gills still p[laying well in the non-danger areas and the defence are holding out well - apart from that lapse by Hessenthaler to give away the penalty. There was one minute of added time.

Second Half starts CRAWLEY 1 (penalty by McCloud) v GILLS 0 - Attendance is sparse at 1,305 (310 hardy Gills) fans in not very nice rainy conditions. Sometimes you have to stand back and admire the Gills fans
Taylor has made two changes Jermaine McGlashan on for Luke Norris and Bradley Dack on for Matt Fish
47 minutes: Lively Dack straight into the action with a cross-field run and shot that went across the face of goal. Free-kick for Gills and first use of the spray can in a Gills game. Free taken by Doughty but was easily cleared.
50 minutes: McGlashan brought down in full flight on the edge of the area by Walsh and the Crawley player was rightly booked - but the free-kick in a good position was wasted by Gills.
53 minutes: Crawley make sub: Dickson off and Sadler On.
55 minutes: German passes to McGlashan causing all sorts of problems and another corner for Gills. Another corner comes to nothing as Loft puts it over the top, high wide and very wasteful.
56 minutes: Referee Sheldrake books his third Crawley player for pulling down Martin as he was running through.
60 minutes: McCloud and Tomlin combine but they fail to put in a shot worthy of the name and Nelson saved. Crawley make another sub Young on for Tomlin who looks like he has pulled something as he limps off.
Gills playing the better football but still a goal adrift - sometimes life is not fair!

CRAWLEY 1 v GILLS 0
62 minutes: Volley from Loft that goes close but still no goals for Gills.
63 minutes: DISASTER as Joe Martin pushes McCloud in the face who goes down (gets yellow) and Joe Martin gets a red - Gills down to 10 men and possibly on their way to losing another match.

CRAWLEY 1 (McCloud) v GILLS 1 (McGlashan)
75 minutes: The goal has somehow livened Crawley up who are now playing better - never understand this football game! Still Gills are well into this match and it is there for the winning. Peter Taylor sends on Danny Kedwell for Antonio German but Crawley defenders have clattered into McGlashan leaving him limping and slower than normal.
78 minutes: Nice creative move from Dickenson for Gills sending McGlashan away but the final shot was not on target. Seconds later Dickenson makes a bad challenge on Banjo sending him crashing and was booked by referee Sheldrake.
80 minutes: Dickenson puts through Bradley Dack who neatly skipped into the arera and slipped the ball into the path of McGlashan who missed the chance of the game by putting it over the top.
82 minutes: Another great move and run from Dickenson who picked out McGlashan in the area who was in a great position but blazed over the bar, This was followed by Dack who also blasted over the bar. All Gills at the moment and Crawley makes last sub change.
84 minutes: Dickenson's turn to miss over the top - Gills having plenty of efforts but few on target. Danny Kedwell is playing in midfield/defence as Gills are down to ten and possibly manager Taylor wants him ready for the penalty shoot-out.
GOAL!! - Doug Loft crosses deep and it goes all the way in for probably the winner! - This was also his first goal of the season.

CRAWLEY 1 v GILLS 2
About two minutes left of normal time + four minutes of added time from referee Sheldrake
Crawley on the attack for the last minutes of this game with Gills falling back to cover. In the last seconds McGlashan took the ball into the corner and time ran out for Crawley.
This was a great effort from Gills who were down to ten men and coming from behind with a first goal of the season by Jermaine McGlashan plus a lucky but fully deserved winner from Doug Loft as Gills are in the Area semi-final and one more game toward a Wembley Final. The one bad point is that Joe Martin receiving a straight red card means that he will miss three games.
A win at last for Gills - their first in eleven and let's hope this is the start of a revival for league one. Well done the lads!

A great result, pity about Joe Martin's red will be sorely missed during next three games.
Lets hope this gives us a confidence boost and kick starts an improvement.

Odd that we've only won away in the jpt! Good to see McGlashan being threatening again tonight. Thought he did ok Saturday as well. I was excited at the start of the season about having 2 wingers with pace in McGlashan and Dickenson. Maybe they are getting match fit and it's time to play them in the league? Fair to say we are still a striker short though

Great read iblue, almost feel like I was there.
Just one possible little error. Please confirm the comment in the 22 minute, do you really mean that the ball was played "short" from the corner? If it is accurate the doubtless Hess and Loft will get wages docked for daring to break PT's long corner policy, could be the first time this season something different has been tried!
