Scally commented, “We had a lot of players last season that weren’t ever going to get anywhere near the first team. When you look at the wage bill for those players and add things like national insurance on you are probably talking £400k.”
I think that's a very fair comment. However, to avoid it you need a manager (and a history of managers) who never, ever make a mistake with a signing.

Also "We are looking at athletes with power and pace. That is essential to any team. If you have that you can achieve a lot in this division.”
Does that mean every opposing team won't dwarf us next season?

Not a surprise - with revenue falling and the debt at the same level, cutting the playing budget is a logical outcome.

I am not sure Scally is saying he is cutting the budget at all only that 400k was being spent on squad players.Guys that were on the fringes of the team. What I think he is saying is instead of signing say 8-9 players he only plans to allow JE to sign around 5 ish. Some of the money saved on squad players can be invested in in the big 5 the rest to be held back in case we need loans during the season.Quality loans and signings worked last season and I see us going further down that road.It will of course mean that we may need to bring some young pro's on to the bench from time to time. But I really do not see that being a bad thing. The development squad need that encouragement and we do not need highly played players doing next to nothing which is always going to happen if you have a squad of 21-28 players.Staying within budget can have the added bonus of being able to invest in extending contracts of those who deserve it thus also bring the team closer together and progressing. The type of wages I think we are talking about is German,Linganzi,a senior reserve keeper, Fish, Barrett and maybe a few others that we had been paying some part of the wages last season.

Stato, I agree that losing some of the high earning squad players is a sound strategy. But, you have to take this in the context of the financial performance of the club - 2014 saw a 21% drop in revenue and no reduction in the debt of £11m (in the Holding Company), which I would imagine is being serviced at a figure of around £60k pa (or over 10% of turnover). Even Scally himself has taken a big cut in his consultancy fee. I would imagine last season's figures are no better. This worries me - it puts a squeeze on the players we can afford and makes losing players like Dack much more likely.

The way to improve finances through gate numbers is to start winning matches and pushing up the league to do this we need an improved squad. Let's hope we see some good signings going forward.

I think the chairman is being very sensible about streamling. Over the last 2 or 3 seasons we've had several players ( linganzi and german for starters) who have been getting wages, whilst not being able to sustain a role on the pitch. Hind sight is a wonderful thing and no doubt the previous manages thought those players would come good, so hopefully Jed will pick a few good players who can play all the time. This is where good managers earn their corn, by spotting and developing players without too many mistakes, but of course there will be one or two errors ,no-one is infallable

Having read the full report and local rag in full now I tend to agree with stato's comments / understanding and if correct can't disagree with PS to any extent. We will soon see when we see the calibre of the first signings.
