Does anyone recall being on the coach that had its windows smashed travelling through Sheffield City centre on the way back from the Sabella inflicted 4-0 defeat in our first match with Utd back in 1979! It capped a poor day we ended up near Rotherham getting our Coach Windows fixed. I still recall a fat Sheffield hooligan throwing something at our Coach window that day,can I mention a notorious Sheffield road sign as well!
At least we beat them 4-2 in the home fixture and I am sure Sheffields two goals that day were own goals, one was definitely scored by Peter Shaw!
Also I remember the Steve Bruce inspired 3-0 home victory against Utd and Jason Lillis's goal in a 2-1 victory when I thought he was going to run around Gillingham town centre in celebration!

I wasn't there, but sounds like most away days in the late 70's/early 80's.

Wasn't it a Sheffield Utd game where a linesman got badly injured after a sliding tackle on the Gordon Road side of the ground.

That's right it was the first match for a while due to snow,I have to say the first half of football in that particular game sticks in my memory not just for the linesman incident but for one the most exciting half's of football I have seen 2-2 at half time and 2-2 at full time. The second half didn't live up to the first, the linesman incident dampened it,if I remember rightly he was quite a stocky fella and slipped on the Gordon road side of the pitch on the cleared snow slush,if I remember rightly a player may even had slid into him by accident! I am also sure that was in the Steve Bruce days God how time fly's!

If I remember rightly I was in the or near the old Gordon Road stand and the linesman was taken out a yard or two from where I stood. I never heard how he was after but he took a really bad hit from two players.

Sheffield United were a 'big' club when they joined us in the old Division Three, looked like they would go straight back up but had a spectacularly poor second half of the 79/80 season including a dreadful 3-0 defeat at Priestfield when they fielded Derek Richardson (later of Maidstone) in goal. That was the return fixture of the earlier 0-4 at Bramall Lane. The linesman incident was the following season, on the very wet Tuesday night of 28th October. My memory is of Stewart Houston sliding into and hurting the linesman somewhere towards the Town End corner on the Gordon Road side. Fast forward to the 4-2, it was the week after the FA Cup comeback against Brentford (January 1984). The notion of two Peter Shaw own goals doesn't sound so far fetched!
