The thing I always like about Jake was he played with commitment and a smile .Never forget that goal of course .The way he grabbed his chance there have been better youth players over the years .But none have worked harder to make a career in the professional game .

I agree stato he worked as hard as he could was always a loyal and passionate team player just did not quite seem to be able to find the talent his Dad had as a player.

I hope he does well. He probably will do well at another club because people would talk him down here because they were expecting like I was, somebody that was going to carry on where his dad was 20 years ago. He won't have that at another club so can play his own game, without expectancy from supporters to reach a certain level. Although it's a shame to be losing those past connections with the club.

Good luck in Grimsby to Jake Hess. Many moons ago I had to attend quarterly meetings there. Not much of a place but the people are great. Tough ride to Grimsby also by car....

Worked hard but was never Div 1 standard. Got more opportunities than most because of his surname.
I wish him well at Grimsby, Div 2 probably his level.

I think is is some what unfair to say he had more opportunities. Jake has worked b**** hard right through his time at Gills. From the youth team where it is fair to say he did not have the talent of Dack or indeed Ashley Miller .But he worked his socks off .That is the biggest benefit of being a Hessenthaler. The fact that he was clearly told .You get nowhere by sitting on your but and not working hard .Andy had to work really hard throughout his career. Jake will clearly do the same. He is a player that will always give everything. He should be repected for that . JET ,MacCammon and many others have had far more talent .But talent is worthless without commitment.

How many other youth players were offered 4 year deals? Of course he got more opportunities. I wish him well and agree he works hard but I stand by my statement he’s not good enough for Div 1. SL obviously didn’t think so either.

Jake never earned their kind of money is my guess, but in my book was-is- worth more than the pair of them together just for his work ethic and committment. Sorry to see you go Jake , good luck in making your way in the world will never forget THAT goal.

I don’t agree that he had it easier at all. In fact, he probably had it harder because he wasn’t his Dad. He’s easily a league one player, but was probably at the club for too long and needed a change.

Agreed on the fact that while there were clear benefits to being Andy's son .After his breakthrough into the 1st team he was on his own .Some fans were very supportive because of his efforts. Others spent too much time making comparisons with his Dad .A bit like saying Stephen Gregory wasn't as good as Paul Smith .

Well a lot of you guys have watched the team more than me over recent years but I saw a fair bit of Jake and I have to say I didn't think he worked that hard at times, got caught out, didn't run back and never nearly as busy as his Dad. I think he could have worked harder and if he had, he may still be at Gills. Of course it could be a confidence issue.

His understanding of Bradley Dack's game clearly helped him a lot in the early days .Then our midfield lost it's way .Jake wasn't good enough to fill that void .But then nor was anyone else .
