Bill Shankly Quotes. Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.
Most of us who have followed football for a fair number of years are aware of this quote,do we agree with it in my case no I don't.
The last few days has seen the pasting of one of our recent ex managers Justin Edinburgh at the young age of 49 leaving behind his wife and two children a extremely sad situation.
My two overriding memories of Justin maybe there is a third are taken from the 2016-2017 season the season that was the end of his tenure at Gillingham,my first memory was Justin celebrating in front of the fans in the goalmouth after Gills 3-1 opening day victory against Southend and my second was the last game of that season against Northampton away when he celebrated his then club Northampton's survival and got untold abuse from the Gills support,at the time although not joining in I thought you deserved that you arrogant fool, but did he?
The third was also that season the dismal home draw with a disjointed side against Brackley in the Fa Cup.
My point!
Football seems to have this ability to turn individuals (my self included)into something from another universe not in touch with the real world,a great football book Red or Dead by David Peace embarks on telling the story of the remarkable rise of Liverpool Football club under Bill Shankley but in that rise it tells of the sad suicide of Jimmy McInnes ex Liverpool footballer and club secretary at the start of their success who could not cope with the pressures of workload during that success and he hanged him self under the Spion Kop days after Liverpools 1965 Fa cup final success.
We may never know what sadly caused Justins passing was it down to heriditary heart problems or the up and down stress of football life but we as football lovers as a whole need something to burst our football bubble.
The great Bill Shankley was wrong in my eyes but then again it was probably a emotive quote like the quotes aimed against our current Chairman and our current manager.
I am proud of our club for choosing to honour Justin in the way it has ,but as a Gills fan I would be even prouder if this extremely sad time brought us all together.
Rip and God bless Justin Edinburgh
