with automatic promotion looking lost and our inability to finish teams off making the play offs far from certain, will this season be seen as a failure if we fail to achieve promotion?
personally think it will, we have a decent squad for this level and, goalkeeper aside, have enough quality to go up. the first half season was a waste and has come back to bite us. sadly next year if in league 2 we will not have the likes of barcham, weston, bayo or cody, so will really struggle. the club has no money, as usual, the season ticekt money is coming early and will have been spent by the time may comes, this from a club that had the 5th highest wage budget in league 1 according to mr scally last may. what do other think?

Oh Purhleeeeeeaaaaaassssssssseeeeeeee.
1. The season isn't over. Still 10 games to go 2. I agree we've dropped some points we could have taken (like Tuesday), but we're unbeaten in a lot of games now and have lost something like 2 in 19. 3. Yes we were awful in the first bit of the season but look at the injury list. Give me another club that would have coped? 4. Why will we lose Barcham, Weston & Bayo? I'm sure if the club still want them, the first 2 will definitely stay. Cody won't stay whatever and time will tell with Bayo. Hess brought Bayo & Cody in, he can replace them. Remember, 18 players are out of contract, some of whom are big earners like Maher, McCammon, Bayo himself, Cody, Jackman, Weston etc. 5. You've contradicted yourself by saying we've not got any money then saying we've got one of the highest wage budgets.
Forgot the doom and gloom. We should make the play offs, have a clearout and the squad will be better next season whatever league we're in

As I've pointed out in previous threads, prior to the draws against Aldershot and then Southend, although we aren't losing much, we aren't winning either. As per the form table, there are too many teams who are capable of jumping ahead of us with considerably better form than us. Statistically on recent form, we are in danger of dropping out of the play off spots unless we find the form to kill off teams and picking up full points. 3. Yes we were awful in the first bit of the season but look at the injury list. Give me another club that would have coped? Injuries haven't help, but the players Hess did have at his available should have played better. I think it is too easy to focus on those who were out injured as an excuse rather than asking what the remaining players are capable of. Some of Hess's tactics were iffy at times too - Spiller on the left wing with Barcham on the right? Playing 4-5-1 with Bayo up front and the apparent instructions to hoof the ball high to Bayo all the time despite the opposition's centerbacks tag teaming him and marking out of the game - I know McDonald was out at the time but Hess had no plan B?? Who did we play when Hess decided to play Fuller as a central midfielder? That was an interesting experiment, especially when Bentley and/or Maher were sitting on the bench as subs... Plus some of the injuries were preventable. Remember when Barcham come on against Southend in the cup, picked up an injury within 5 minutes but Hess kept him on for another 30 minutes despite the obvious injury? And then Hess cursing his luck when Barcham was out long term? Or the few times when Akinfenwa was clearly carrying a knock but kept him on - On the times we were leading, an extra midfielder and a switch to 4-5-1 to tighten up the midfield would have worked, but he was forced off injured 10 minutes later and missed at least the next game? My point is, when players had picked up knocks on the pitch, Hess gambled and kept them on but then paid the price when they couldn't run it off. Quite simply, if we don't get promotion and a 1st division team comes in for Barcham, Weston and Bayo, then expect them to leave.... All three have the quality to play at a higher level and will attract interest if available on a free.... None of them have the loyalty of someone like Southall whose love of Gillingham extends to signing for us even if he got better offers.... All three of them are young enough that ambition and wanting to play at a higher level will be the greatest motivation as to where they sign their contract. 5. You've contradicted yourself by saying we've not got any money then saying we've got one of the highest wage budgets. Forgot the doom and gloom. We should make the play offs, have a clearout and the squad will be better next season whatever league we're in He said that Scally said we had one of the biggest wage budgets in the first division, ie last season. We should make the play offs, but at times some supporters seem to be overconfident and take it as a given that we will. The fact is that the players need to step up and win the final play off place....

I wouldn't see not going up as a failure but it all depends on what players are released and what new players come in the summer. The team that went down last year wasn't very good and the size of Gillingham and their gates say they should finish round about the play-off mark. If Scally/hess would have come out at the beginning of the season and said' we want to finish as high up the league as possible but ultimately we will be building for the 2011/12 season as I will have a lot more scope to play with in the terms of wages/contracts with so many players being out of contract' I would have been as equally as pleased with this rather than the ' anything other than promotion is a failure' we had to put up with. I hope they go up but another season in league 2 with a trimmed squad with better quality than just players making up numbers may be more beneficial in the long term.

Interesting you point to Barcham and Weston while I agree they show at times their quality in this division. I wouldn't be that cut up if they left both have largely failed this season at this time I would not offer them a new deal.Although Weston is showing signs but are these players only really putting everything in because they are out of contract.Bayo on the other hand will play whenever he can and as of this time he has been starting or sub in more games than anyone.Yes he plays through the pain barrier unlike others he cares thats why he and Matty would be top of my list and I am glad Hess seems to share my view.Commitment is the most important thing in a player in my book.

There's no doubt we all love The Gills and consequently many of us look at them through rose coloured glasses. We were awful in the first half of the season and have made great strides since. However we are not the dominant side we need to be to catch up after such a poor start. I don't think automatic promotion is likely but like Churchill, I don't want to confuse the unusual wth the impossible. We could make the play-offs with a win tomorrow and a win in 6 or more of the remaining games. A succession of draws wil not do it. I think it would be better for the club if it misses out this year to keep as much quality as we can for next seson. If we get out of the gate well next year and stay in the top 2 slots, we will get the crowds that will restore our club coffers somewhat. A winning team here in a commanding position is capable of drawing 9,000 and 10,000 crowds which would be amongst the best in the division. That level of support would carry us into our first season back in Lg 1 riding the crest of a wave. Wouldn't you just love 18 home wins and the feel of Fortress Priestfield again? UTG. Smack the Stanley - smack 'em hard!

I agree about too many draws. A win and a lose is better than 2 draws, so we need to really go for the wins now,and not worry if we pick up a defeat or two. Probably automatic is out of reach, but the play offs' are well within our grasp

Saturday was a good day for us. Now only 4 points off 3rd spot - admitedly we've played 2 more games and have an inferior goal difference. We now have 2 games left this month - both away, whilst several sides around us have 3 or 4 - 2 or 3 at home. This month won't decide promotion but I would settle for us maintaining our present state (ie 5 points clear of 5th place and only 4 points off 3rd) and it will fill me with more optimism than no away wins from these 2, results elsewhere going against us and the likes of Bury and Wycombe goimg 10 points clear,e whislt we slip to 8th/9th.
