I wasn't able to get to the match last night, so when I heard about Jake Hessenthaler's wonder goal I was quite jealous that I hadn't seen it. Fortunately, I found this. What a way to open your account ! First of many ... ?

Decent goal but hardly goal of the season. He had a completely open goal to shoot at and even then almost missed it. Unless of course, you think Hess actually aimed his shot to clip the bottom of the crossbar before going in....

Lightning strikes twice! Didn't Iffy Onoura score a very similar goal at Coventry years ago.

Bit harsh that, it wasnt a open goal by any means, there were a few players in the way and keeper running back, and the ball was bouncing across his body, If he had drilled it low it would probably not have made it through. A superb finish and quite deliberate by the looks of it.

It certainly looked like a contender for goal of the season

Of course he meant it johnknee. He always practices hitting the crossbar in warm up and for a change done it for real! Great effort and definitely meant.

Sitting in the Rainham end had a good view of Jake Hessenthaler's goal. Goal of the season for me. Young Jake shows outstanding promise, and maturity, andI am sure he will be as good as his Father. Gills fans have a lot to look forward to.

I've seen dozens of similar efforts by so called premiership superstars on Match of the Day and they've failed miserably . The more I watch the goal the better it is. If you don't by a ticket you won't win the prize. Jake Hessenthalar's goal certainly won the jackpot with that effort. It got me off my feet, that's for sure. One of the best goals at Priestfield for a very long time.

A headed goal from Weston, and very good one too, suggested the presence of flying pigs over Priestfield. As Jake's effort crossed the line they looped the loop in formation.

One of the best goals at Priestfield for a very long time. Don't get me wrong here - I am having more of a go at the fans who I feel have gone slightly OTT in thinking it is some sort of wondergoal that should be featured on every future "Greatest Goals" DVD (ok, I am going slightly OTT myself with that description). Basically, people are talking as if he deliberately aimed to clip it off the crossbar rather than simply just blast the ball as hard as he could at the goal. It was a well executed shot in the end, and the shot was clearly deliberate in terms of him actually taking a shot, but some sort of wondergoal? Meh... From all the goals I can remember us scoring this season, I think I'd rate our third against Port Vale higher - several slick one-twos outside the area before Cody was played in and skillfully placed it in the far corner. I'd also go as far as suggesting that Weston's goal was much more technically difficult than Hess's...

Hess's goal showed two things. Firstly technique but more importantly composure. How many players miss that kind of chance, especially given he was under a little pressure. However, more impressively for me is the fact he's been our stand out midfielder in the last 2 games. I only wish Jack Payne was still around to play alongside him. That would be some partnership (and that's not a sleight on Gregory who is playing well)

I agree it might not have been technically that difficult, but what a moment!!
It was the presence of mind that makes it great to me, a proper footballing brain and the confidence to go for it. The way he won the ball in the first place and the fact that he didn't have much time to see the opportunity and decide what to do. How many times do we see our players hesitate on the edge of the box until the moment has passed? I don't think there are many others in the side who would have tried, let alone made the target.
Does Jake doing so well (with this goal and generally in mid-field) make anyone else feel old? Some of us have seen him score in front of the Rainham End many times before....
