Hard one. The players aren't his, but his signings haven't improved things and none have been stand out players. We play better football at home under him and have got some great results as well as some truly awful ones. It's fair to say he hasn't made a compelling case to get the job

People have asked previously about how is it that a lot of our opposition have had some quality players on loan from the Arsenals etc and why couldn't we get those types... The difference why other teams have had those class and Taylor hasn't brought any in is because those class players were loaned at the beginning of the season for the whole season. Taylor, coming in late, has to make do with loans that he can get. Come mid season, the availability of quality players is gone and to a large extent players who are out of favour at their current club make up the main pool of players.
It is maybe no surprise that our best loanee this season has been Harriman who we signed at the start of the season.
Where we *might* benefit from keeping Taylor is due to the fact he does have a reputation for developing players from his England days. He also has a certain reputation for preferring passing football rather than the "lump it forward" reputations of Hess and Allen. Whether or not those reputations are actually valid nowadays is debatable, but we might be seen as a good choice for some of those better players.

The problem for any manager has go to be the fact we all agree that we need some new defenders for next season. But they are all still under contract we have Fish who may or may not get back to his best.Barrett, Legge and Martin to replace them all in the first team but still have them on the books will be really difficult for anyone. The only ways forward can see is to release most of those out of contract.Leaving us light in other areas.Using more young players.Or try to find maybe two good young two footed defenders (maybe on loan) who can fit in with whoever wins the other two places.Who is in charge there is very little room for error every new player will have to be worth his money.

With that assessment it is not a new manager that is needed, but divine intervention.

Unless we are going to go for someone unknown and unproven (in this country anyway) then we may as well stick with taylor, I don't think he is amazing but he is ok and experienced. We get ambitious and go for broke, or we try and consolidate

Is Taylor to blame? For us having such a poor defensive record? Well you might blame him for odd things here and there but principally the blame, if that's the right word, lies with the players. I think several are just about hanging on in this league and several more are average. This league is much better than it used to be as foreign players squeeze British players downwards and burgeoning premiership squads lead to ever greater numbers of loanees.
Taylor, or AN Other, the situation remains that we need to refresh the squad. Stick with the same personnel and we will struggle. Of course those coming out of contract are easiest to lose but it's more complicated than that. We may well have players under contract that would be attractive to league 2 clubs willing to offer longer contracts. Fans might want us to resign players that want to leave, or are wanted by other clubs. It's been clear this season that unless you have the money to buy an Assombalonga then you need to get young players in on loan for the season.
On a personal note; I'd prefer Taylor to stay. I don't want to watch grim, percentage football. I know that Taylor will be trying to get us to play the right way, will be trying to improve individual players, will have an honest and accurate view of the task. I don't ask more than that. If he fails then so be it but I'd not rate him a failure so far. I thought we were heading inevitably for relegation before he arrived. We were demoralized, one dimensional and just plain not good enough. If he keeps us up, and I think he will, we would need to find someone very special to justify a change.

Well said jogills. I suspect that PS has already decided to keep PT here at least for next season. His statement about spending 50K to get the pitch right to play the sort of passing game that we wan't to see says it all.
I believe that the likes of Barrett & Martin (who I do not rate at all) are on contract for another year are going to be a problem. If we could afford it & I was in charge I would call their agents in and tell them in no uncertain terms that they are more than welcome to stay and run their contract down but they will only be on the bench at best for all of the coming year. Between them, those two, along with Legge have been responsible for most of the poor goals that we have conceded this season. None of them have got the pace to ever get us out of trouble against some of the fit young strikers at this level. The alternative,so that we don't have to pay them off would be to tell them that if another club want's them, they can go for free
As for Peter Taylor, give him the finances to bring his own squad in, and then judge him at the end of next season.
