Heard that from managers and chairman before. If the right offer comes in and the manager thinks he can get a similar player for less and keep any residual money to strengthen the squad further then the chances are a deal will be done - that's football and indeed business in general. Jack Payne springs to mind as an example of that.

I'm not sure how much control a manager can expect to have TBH. If say, Dack, was offered a great deal by a Championship club (unlikely IMO)I don't think we'd want to keep him if he wanted to go. With so much of footballing success being about frame of mind, we wouldn't get the best from a player who thought his career had been thwarted by being forced to stay.
So, as Muppet says, it depends what deals are offered. My car's not for sale but if you offered me more than £2.50....

I am sure it will have been discussed by manager and chairmen and agreed we don't need to sell BUT every player has his price and if a great offer came along JE would sell as long as he got enough back in his budget to get a replacement.

If we want to make a play for the championship then we need to retain our best players and add to strengthen the team from there.

If they were tempted by a great offer for John Egan would they reconsider releasing Leon Legge as one of the reasons was that he is right footed like Egan?

If we want to make a play for the championship then we need to retain our best players and add to strengthen the team from there. I agree Jan, but retaining Dack if a good offer comes does not have to be such a bad thing. There other players out there as good if not better than Bradley in the position he plays. For all we know JED may want to change our style of play. A bigger worry for me is an offer for John Egan that we couldn't refuse that would be a problem.

Agree Holbrook, Egan is my concern as he was by far our most consistent player last season and would cost a great deal to replace, if you could replace him. Arguably Other than Bristol City and Preston centre halfs he was above the majority of others we played

The key thing is to get John Egan to commit to an extended deal. Having him leave for a small tribunal fee would be criminal. If we can't get him to sign a new deal and clubs are prepared to pay good money (north of 500k imo), economics dictate it makes sense to sell

My mates over the water tell me that Southend fans were very unhappy when John signed for us after his loan spell there during season 2013/14 and I would be equally sad if he was to go after one superb season with Gills but, as the two posters above have said, for a club like ours it is always important to make one big sale every year if you have a player who is in demand.

Moaning sods those Southend supporters, we let them have Barrett back.
